Arizona Forensic Remediation Foundation Association

A nonprofit organization

AZ Forensic and Remediation for Foundation Association (AFRFA) is a nonprofit association formed by industry professionals to help homeowners to asses their need for a foundation repair contractor, engineer, or both.

When looking for a foundation repair contractor/ engineer with whom to consult regarding foundation issues, important selection criteria are:

  • Registered Professional Engineer in Arizona;
  • Can show by resume or project list that she or he is experienced in foundation remediation services;
  • Is a member of American Society of Civil Engineers (ASCE);
  • and develops and accomplishes the necessary field and office tasks necessary to develop an engineered remediation plan

  • ASCE, founded in 1852, is the nation’s oldest engineering society with over 150,000 members in 177 countries.
  • The Structural Engineering Institute (SEI), formed in 1996, is a subgroup within ASCE, and has over 30,000 members.
  • Also, in 1996 the Geo-Institute (G-I) was established, also a subgroup within ASCE, and has over 13,000 members.
  • Together these licensed and experienced professionals develop and produce codes and standards which local and national governments adopt.
  • Importantly, Engineer members of AFRFA are also members of ASCE, although they are separate organizations.

So Your Home is Built on Expansive Soils

In 1995, ASCE published a book to help those homeowners who may have issues with their foundations, as a result of being built on expansive soils. The book is entitled: “So Your Home is Built on Expansive Soils”. In 2019, ASCE published a second edition of “So Your Home is Built on Expansive Soils”. The information contained in this book helps homeowners with the important task of protecting their foundation from moisture and assists them in mitigating moisture infiltration.

In 2018, the Post-Tension Institute prepared PTI DC10.8-18, a document that mirrors “So Your Home is Built on Expansive Soils” and is also invaluable in helping homeowners to understand and analyze post tension foundation movement.

We recommend that these publications and documents be used when working on foundations in Arizona.
